Prof. Dr. Ted Selker (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Selker)

Ted spent 5 years as director of Considerate Systems research at Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley. He was also responsible for developing the campus’s research mission, teaching HCI, Android product design, and research in voting with disabilities.

He is well known as a creator and tester of new scenarios for working with computing systems. His design practice includes speaking engagements, innovation workshops consulting. He is CTO of Foldimate for which he made a shirt-folding robot this year.

Ted spent ten years as an associate Professor at the MIT Media Laboratory where he created the Context Aware Computing group, co-directed the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project, and directed the CIDI Kitchen of the future/ product design of the future project. His work is noted for creating demonstrations of a more considerate world in which intentions are recognized and respected in complex domains.

His successes at targeted product creation and enhancement lead to his role of IBM Fellow and director of User Systems Ergonomics Research at IBM. He has also served as a consulting professor at Stanford University, taught at Hampshire, University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Brown Universities and worked at Xerox PARC and Atari Research Labs.

Prof. Bjoern Stockleben (Film University Babelsberg, Konrad Wolf, Germany)

Björn Stockleben (male) is professor for new media production at Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. His current research areas comprise management of interdisciplinary teams, data-driven media production, online collaboration and non-linear AV media. He holds a master’s degree in Media Sciences, Media Technology and Computer Sciences from Technische Universität Braunschweig and Braunschweig University of Art in 2003. He used to work as coordinator of the Master programme Cross Media at University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal. Before, he worked as technical manager and UX consultant in EC and ESA funded research projects such as HBB-NEXT, ARTES-COTV and TV-Ring at Rundfunk Berlin-Brandeburg innovation project group. He coordinates the Erasmus+ partnership “OnCreate” on creative processes in online collaboration. He has lectured in media theory and human-machine interaction at various universities and is a PhD student in Media Management at TU Tampere, Finland.

Tactile Communication in Extreme Contexts: Exploring the Design Space Through Kiteboarding

A/Prof. Tim Merrit (Aarhus University, Denmark)

Timothy Merritt is an Associate Professor in the Design Research Group at Aarhus University Dept. Of Engineering and teaches interaction design courses in the IT Product Development BSc and MSc programme. He holds a PhD from the National University of Singapore where his thesis explored how and why people respond differently to artificial and human teammates in co-operative games. This extends to the broad focus of explorations with technology as a partner in creativity and human performance. His research interests include human–robot interaction, shape-changing interfaces, and the design of interactive spaces. Outcomes from research and teaching are shared at www.ixd.net

In this talk, I discuss kiteboarding as an experimental platform to find ways in which technologies could support communication needs in mentally and physically demanding contexts. In our HapticKite system, a kite control bar with embedded sensors and actuators communicates instructions through voice or tactile cues to explore facilitating communication for control guidance. Tactile cues were shown to be productive in changing behavior. Voice, however, communicated planning models and directional guidance better than tactile cues. Still, voice may negatively impact experience. The experiments highlight the need for better ways for communication tools to support mental models. To conclude, I will share some insights from our current work exploring haptics and kiteboarding and will connect this to wider issues in the design of technologies for people.

Derrik Yaw (Graph Studio – Film Director, Content Planer)

Derrik, a Curtin University graduate in Film & TV has dabbled in multiple fields including marketing for a multinational oil & gas corporate, graphic designing and events management before settling on focusing all his creative energy to his true passion of video production.

Besides commercial video productions, he enjoys creating social media friendly short films. His shortie, ‘Carmen’ based on his life experience of a deaf interview candidate has been viewed over 2,000 times since June 2013. Due to good response and appreciation from the deaf community, Derrik followed up with another short film centred around a deaf character, called ‘Flaws of Attraction’, which has garnered over 20,000 views to date and will also be part of the “Inclús: Barcelona International Disability Film Festival” workshop. Other notable short films include ‘Shadow’ which was one of the Top 10 selection for the SKT South East Asia Short Film Festival 2015. It now has over 30,000 views on popular short film platform Vidsee.

His latest contribution to the exciting Malaysia Web Film scene is for his role as the video director and co-creator of the wildly famous BSN’s Kucing Happy social videos which recently picked up the Golden Kancil at the Kancil’s Award 2015, Marketing Excellence Award and Effies. In just 2 years time, his growing portfolio has span across South East Asia with popular brands such as IKEA, Coleman, Rinnai, BSN, Volvo, Nestle just to name      a few.
